About Sunrise Senior Living

Sunrise Senior Living logo

Average Rating

3.8 (130 reviews)

Founded in 1981, Sunrise Senior Living has offered assisted living, memory, respite, and skilled nursing care based on Dutch principles for the last 45 years. Founders Paul and Terry Klaassen were both influenced by their family experiences with caring for older adults which inspired them to pioneer a new approach to senior living. The couple established their first community in Virginia, growing to eventually offer a variety of services across the country. CEO Jack Callison holds over 15 years of senior living expertise and has led Sunrise to be certified as a Great Place to Work in 2023-2024.

Sunrise Senior Living customizes its approach to each resident's needs and preferences, and curates its Sunrise Live With Purpose™ programming to provide opportunities for all personalities and interests. From Live with Artistry classes to Live with Learning, Sunrise residents have the chance to pursue the subjects that have always intrigued them. Older adults are encouraged to bring their pets when they move into Sunrise communities, and most Sunrise communities have their own cat or dog whose companionship all residents can enjoy. Sunrise utilizes an electronic health record system that allows community caregivers, doctors, pharmacists, and therapists to coordinate care for residents. This technology can also send updates to family members about their loved one's health. Similarly forward-thinking are Sunrise's efforts towards energy efficiency. 30 Sunrise communities have been recognized by the EPA as ENERGY STAR certified in the senior facilities category. Sunrise continues to strengthen its dedication to environmental stewardship alongside its mission to "champion quality of life for all seniors."

What families are saying

We’ve gathered and summarized real family reviews from across the internet for you. Contact a CareScout representative for details.

The reviews for Morningside House present a mixed picture, highlighting both positive and negative aspects of the facility. On the positive side, many reviewers praise the compassionate and professional staff, noting their kindness, empathy, and dedication to resident care. The facility is described as clean, with a welcoming environment and a variety of activities that engage residents. The dining experience is often commended for its quality, and the community is noted for its beautiful surroundings and inviting atmosphere. Several reviewers appreciate the longevity of the caregivers, which is seen as a rarity in the healthcare sector. However, there are notable criticisms, particularly regarding corporate management and communication. Some reviewers express frustration with the lack of responsiveness from corporate-level staff and difficulties in reaching personnel during emergencies. The transition from Sunrise to Morningside management is mentioned as problematic, with issues of communication and transparency highlighted. Billing practices and the clarity of charges are also points of concern for some families. Overall, while the on-the-ground staff and the facility itself receive high marks for care and environment, the corporate management and communication issues detract from the overall experience for some families. The facility is recommended by many for its care and community, but potential residents and their families are advised to conduct thorough research and ask detailed questions, especially regarding management and communication practices.

May 2026

After a horrific experience at Silver Springs/Cura Health in East Norriton, we moved to Morningside of Blue Bell. Our loved one has been there for a couple of months and we couldn't be happier! The level of personal care, compassion and professionalism is beyond reproach. They have standards that set them apart from every other facility in the area. The Leadership is very engaged and the staff make the facility run like you are getting individual care. Every aspect of Morningside has impressed our family, from maintaining a very high level of cleanliness, food service and memory care. I would absolutely give my personal recommendation in guiding anyone there for assisted living or memory care,
