The reviews for The Hidenwood Assisted Living and Retirement Community in Newport News present a mixed picture. Many reviewers praise the facility for its welcoming atmosphere, friendly and professional staff, and a variety of amenities, including a movie theater, salon, and garden area. The community is often described as clean, inviting, and homey, with numerous activities and programs for residents. Several reviewers highlight the compassionate care provided by staff members like Joyce, DeDee, and Zsavonne, who are noted for their dedication and kindness. However, there are significant concerns raised by some reviewers. Issues include poor management, lack of communication, and inadequate care, particularly in the memory care unit. Complaints about unresponsive staff, improper protocols, and maintenance issues like inoperable elevators and pest problems are mentioned. Some reviewers express dissatisfaction with the handling of deposits and the high staff turnover rate, which they believe affects the quality of care. Overall, while many find The Hidenwood to be a pleasant and supportive environment, others have experienced serious issues that have led them to seek alternative care options. The reviews suggest that potential residents and their families should thoroughly investigate and ask detailed questions about care consistency and communication protocols before making a decision.

February 2023

I went to The Hidenwood in Newport News. I like that the bedrooms weren't small. They had little suites where they had a little refrigerator, a little living room area, and a little bedroom area. I liked that it was roomy, and it seemed more like a little apartment. I also like that they don't separate the men from the women. They could eat together, and they could do everything together. I like that they mix the genders. They have a bigger facility. They have like three floors, so the patients can get on the elevator and go where they want to go. On the memory care side, when they were eating, they were all talking as they greeted me like, 'Hey, hello.' As I noticed these patients, were interacting with each other, and smiling and greeting the staff. They were all friendly together, and I like that. I looked at the menu and they had choices. They got to pick between three things that they might want to eat, and the food looked pretty good. It was lunchtime, so they were all eating. I

November 2022

Wonderful community! Pleasant staff, loads of activities and food is amazing!! They have a really well-thought activities calendar and my mom has something to do almost every day (her favorite is music with Mr Jim :). This month they are also doing a cute series of comedy nights - an I Love Lucy night, a Dick Van Dyke night etc. Super happy with our decision!

Lorie

May 2019

We have found the staff here at The Hidenwood to be kind, friendly and helpful. It has a family atmosphere instead of a cold facility. The rehab offered at The Hidenwood is very helpful as well.

The Chesapeake opened its doors in 1969 and quickly became recognized as a premier senior community on the Virginia peninsula. The Community transitioned to a continuing care retirement community in the late 1990s and totally redesigned its campus with the addition of new resident buildings, cottages, and an impressive community center. Construction was completed in 2004 and today the Community continues to provide a warm and welcoming environment on its 40 acre campus, complete with beautiful trees and flowering vegetation. Additional renovations are currently in progress throughout the campus to further enhance the beauty and amenities of The Chesapeake. Here, your loved one will savor meals made from scratch, always have a dedicated caregiver by their side, and enjoy a vibrant social calendar. A big part of our promise is our nationally acclaimed HigherPath senior health model — a proactive approach to wellness that creates more longevity and happiness. And a fun fact?
