About The Kenney

The Kenney is an Assisted Living community in the Seattle area that also offers Memory Care, Independent Living, Nursing Home, and Continuing Care Retirement Community care.

West Seattle’s only continuing care retirement community started more than a century ago with a dream. The estate of Seattle pioneers Samuel and Jessie Kenney called for creation of what they deemed “a home for the aged” providing “shelter, care and comforts of home.” A dedicated Board of Trustees spent the next decade carrying out the couple’s plans. Incorporated on June 20, 1901, the Samuel and Jessie Kenney Presbyterian Retirement Home housed its first residents in various locations owned by the Kenney estate, primarily in what is now downtown Seattle.

The West Seattle Kenney started with the Seaview Building, which opened its doors to residents in 1909. The 1950s and 1960s saw the addition of the Sunrise Building and the Calvin Health Center. The Ballymena, named after Samuel’s birthplace in Ireland, opened in 1985. Then, in 2003, the Lincoln Vista Assisted Living Building opened, complete with a fitness center and community rooms.

Today, we continually evaluate the needs and desires of our residents and our community to ensure that we are well positioned for future stability and growth. We’re proud to say that what started out as one couple’s dream is now one of most respected not-for-profit retirement communities in the region, if not the nation. Our mission – and Samuel and Jessie Kenney’s vision – of “life enhancement for the senior community” lives on.

What families are saying

We’ve gathered and summarized real family reviews from across the internet for you. Contact a CareScout representative for details.

The Kenney, a senior living community in Seattle, receives mixed reviews from residents, families, and visitors. Many praise its caring staff, beautiful grounds, and variety of activities. Residents appreciate the sense of community, quality of food, and the facility's ability to cater to different levels of care, from independent living to memory care. The location is also highlighted for its proximity to Lincoln Park and public transportation. However, some reviews express concerns about management and staff turnover, which have reportedly affected the quality of care. A few reviewers mention issues with billing and communication, particularly in the nursing and rehab center, which some feel lacks natural light and feels more clinical than residential. There are also complaints about unprofessional behavior from some staff members and dissatisfaction with the management's handling of these issues. A notable negative review comes from a contractor who claims they were not paid for services rendered, citing financial instability within the organization. Despite these criticisms, many still recommend The Kenney for its warm community atmosphere and comprehensive care options, though some caution potential residents to be aware of the management and financial concerns. Overall, The Kenney is seen as a facility with strong potential but facing challenges that need addressing to maintain its reputation.
