"My grandmother moved in to the Summit (formerly the Sheridan) in July 2022. She lived there until her passing in March 2024 at age 94. It was her third ALF since her stroke in 2016, and it was by far the best. I live about five minutes away and so I was there often. I was able to see first-hand the attention and care she received from all of the staff. From the CNAs to the nurses to the maintenance and cleaning personnel, I always felt they had her best interests at heart. They have several integrated doctors and PT/OT (though you can keep your own) and because of that they were able to catch a few issues my grandmother was having long before they became critical. There are some things you can tell from a tour - the activities, the physical amenities, maybe even the food. But what you cannot tell, and what matters most, are the people who work there. "My mother has been a resident of Watercrest for 1 1/2 years. It's a beautiful facility with great hospitality. There are concerns that could take the rating down lower because she pays over $4K to stay here and she is not receiving that level of service. 1. The caregivers lose my mother's clothing items such as bras, and socks. 2. Towels and washcloths are missing and never folded neatly. 3. The caregivers continue to put the same outfit on my mom multiple times a week when she has plenty of clothes. 4. She has plenty of hangers for each pair of pants and shirts but 3 pairs of pants are hung up on 1 hanger. 5. Clothes can be found on the floor of the closet. 6. Clean laundry balled up in a chair or thrown over a chair instead of properly folded or hung up. 7. Sheets and mattress pads are balled up on the top shelf in the closet instead of properly folded. 8. The bed is poorly made up. 9. Bathroom and kitchen areas are not thoroughly cleaned. 10. The carpet only gets vacuumed when I vacuum it. 11. The carpet has been cleaned 3 or 4 times. It gets messy because she is in an electric wheelchair. 12. The caregivers have broken her desk when they move the power chair and keep bumping into her desk. 13. The room gets dusted when I dust. 14. There are always other resident's shirts, pants, and socks in my mother's laundry. 15. The trashbags are very cheap and flimsy. 16. Caregivers are not wearing face masks around the residents. 17. When my mother is not receiving occupational therapy, she does not get showers. She will go weeks/months without taking a shower. Instead, she gets wiped down in the bed. Resident's Complaint 18. The caregivers leave their dirty gloves behind, on the kitchen counter, or on the floor. 19. The caregivers sometimes can take an hour or more to answer calls not knowing if the call is a life or death situation. 20. "My loved one has been living in Summerfield for a few months. Apparently the change in ownership has resulted in a director who has no concern for the well-being of residents. The most consistent complaints are about the food and chef. Most seriously, the kitchen adds ingredients, like sugar in vegetables!, without informing residents, who have special dietary needs and have to know what they're eating. Surely there are laws in assisted living facilities about following residents' nutritional requirements and informing them of ingredients. Evidently nearly all foods are spicy. Also overcooked and barely edible. The chef literally walked out of the room when residents tried to comment on the problems, and the director makes empty promises. The food is not the only problem and my loved one, who is generally not fussy, is planning to leave. "The Windsor Reflections is a horrible place. If I could give this facility a minus rating I would. Please do not go there. My father was there for only a very short time. When I realized how bad it was I couldn't wait to get him out of there. The Executive Director and the Health Care Director are vindictive and mean. They were unresponsive to the problems there and did not treat my father well. The people who worked there complained all of the time about the management. The food is terrible. My father stopped eating because it was so bad. This facility was not clean. Staffing was also a terrible problem. Many of the workers were brought in from an agency and they did not care about the residents. "My father was in Memory Care. Average meals, public areas still clean as building is relatively new. Calls dropped frequently. Rooms get dirty and care is average because Administration likes to keep families out of facility and separated so management is in control - family oversight of rooms and loved ones can be impossible. They keep the place closed unusually longer than other facilities and use Covid as an excuse. (Ironically, many caretakers are not vaccinated). Good employees leave and high turnover rates exist because of toxic and dysfunctional management style. So, embracing the philosophy of a professional approach to management style does not exist here. However, when families enter the facility you would never know. Dedicated families eventually figure out how toxic the facility is but are afraid to say anything for fear of reprisals. Also, Caretakers don’t speak up for fear of reprisals. "Grand Living Sarasota (GL) is a senior residence in east Sarasota County with attractive first-floor public spaces and poorly designed, cheaply constructed resident apartments. Based on my more than 2.5 years of living at GL, I would not recommend this facility. I have four main reasons for my negative review: 1) I feel my health was jeopardized at GL. 2) Food at GL is mediocre, which should not be, since 3) GL’s rent fees are higher than most other leased senior residences in the Sarasota area. 4) My standard of living at GL was diminished. Living there felt like a “step down.” because so many of the amenities I enjoyed most of my life just don’t exist at GL. Was there positive side? Yes, of course. Fitness, Activities and Wellness (Medical) departments were good, but I don't have space here for details. My advise to you? Keep looking. A full 25% of the people here as clients may as well be inmates because they are crazy and some of them are violent and belong in another facility.
