"I felt many caregivers were not properly trained to transfer residents. There is a rule that only one person transfer is acceptable. Although I never needed more than one person I felt extreme pressure to move from the facility. I had caregivers try to transfer me by pulling on one leg, one arm etc., improper use of gate belt. "Our family member is living at the Gardens, the Memory Care unit of the Watermark at the Pearl. Our experience has been very mixed. Pros: New building, great location, beautiful restaurant and valet parking. Cons: Opened in 2024 and this unit has already been through three memory care directors, showing a real fracture in leadership. Communication between leadership, staff and the families is poor at every level. There is a lack of transparency regarding the care of your loved one and whether the service plans are being followed by staff. Many of the direct care staff go above and beyond to care for residents but are motivated intrinsically, not lead by leadership. Food is mediocre, little engagement activity offered, housekeeping and laundry are disorganized. High staff turnover and not staffed for resident needs. Bored residents cause problematic behaviors. "In a day and age when most Senior Living communities are owned by REITs and managed to tight budgets, Touchmark continues to be owner-operated after 40+ years in the industry. The community setting is peacefully placed on the top of the West Hills, looking west towards the coastal mountains. The team of staff is incredible and seems to share the same values as the residents they are serving. My favorite part of this community is the nature trails they have carved through the hills. "Mom was a resident of Lavender Skies – the memory care unit – for 14 months. As with most, making the decision for her move there was necessary, but emotionally difficult. My criteria for her care were a safe location, close enough for us to travel each day – which we did, we visited her daily – a caring and clean environment and a feeling of compassion from the employees at every level. Daily activities appropriate to memory care patients as well as balanced and nutritious food service were also important. MorningStar in Happy Valley was a perfect fit. The facility was at all times secure and immaculate. During times of covid outbreaks in the community, routinely scheduled testing was ongoing and this facility faced minimal ‘lockdowns’. At mom’s age in the upper 90’s, she was obviously in the endangered population. Her residence was well laid out and met her needs, accommodating her wheeled walker. All employees were cheerful, attentive to her needs and her personal preferences. Daily activities were always offered and encouraged, even tho mom’s physical limitations of sight and hearing made it difficult for her to participate. The Christian atmosphere of care and acceptance for one another, as well as the bible studies and church services was greatly appreciated. The meals served were exceptional, both in nutrition and presentation. Placemats and linens were used at every meal. The expression of personal dignity was exemplified. Our daily visits allowed us to develop deep relationships with the employees at all levels. From the concierge at the front door to each individual care manager, we were met with kindness and compassion. In the end, we were like family and shared in mom’s care and grieved in her passing. At the end of her life, she was on hospice. The attention paid to her, especially in her final hours was extraordinary. The Memory Care director was constantly present, attending to her physical and emotional needs, as well as myself at her last breath. "My Mother has been living in one of the independent-living apartments for seven years and is very happy here. They keep the grounds landscaping looking nice year around. Any time she needs anything, even a light bulb in the ceiling changed, they will take care of it. The difficulty is however, no one answers the phone anymore. Now whe we call its a phone tree and leaving a message. After that it can take a few days to get a response. Fortunately we haven't had anything urgent come up.
