My parents moved there and love the cottages and simplicity of having the internet and cable TV (and maybe utilities?) all rolled into one package. They were also getting weekly housekeeping. Unfortunately the new management company (Avenue 5 I think) took over, so without notice they don't get any of those things, but are expected to keep paying the premium rent. "Please do not turn to Brookdale Foundation House for help with your loved ones. They are in the business of making money. Period. When we first inquired here, they seemed so nice and accommodating, that is UNTIL they found out we were on a budget and asked about Medicaid programs. Where at first they were willing to negotiate on rent, second-person fees, community fee, etc., the minute they found out we were not wealthy, they changed completely. The answer to every question we asked was "no," "no," "no," and they weren't so nice about it. They wanted to charge my parents nearly $7000/month in rent for a barely 600 square-foot one-bedroom apartment, a $4500 (non-refundable) community fee, and nearly $6000/month in care costs for just ONE of my parents.If you have done any research on assisted living, you will know that this exploitative and outrageous! "Merrill Gardens is lovely unless one actually needs the assisted living that they advertise. We had hoped that our parent would be able to end their days there, but Merrill Gardens is unwilling to provide the care they advertise and that is listed on the contract we signed. Furthermore, their head nurse is really unfit for dealing with the slightest problem and should really find employment where she doesn't have to deal with people. There is a new executive director in training she does not have the qualifications to be executive director and is causing a lot of stress and unhappiness for myself and other residents. I have been told that they would help me find another place.Way to much hassle and work to move ,so I will stay here not very happy but hoping that things will change.
